Job Summary
The overall purpose of the medication aide position is to administer oral and topical medications to residents to residents. Incumbents perform these tasks as ordered by physicians, under the supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with state and federal rules and regulations, and consistent with the facility policies. Performs routine daily tasks required in maintaining the health, comfort, and well being of the residents. Functioning within the constraints of established policy and procedure consistent with accepted/allowed standards of practice and state and federal regulations. Working contacts include: residents/authority for decisions specific to assigned functions under the direction of a licensed nurse, but may seek additional direction from the charge nurse, nurse supervisor, director of nursing or administrator as may be appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Must have state certification as a nursing assistant or P.C.A or receiving training within 6 months of hire. Training is provided by the facility.
- Must have state approved medication administration certification and required NC Adult Care Home Medication training.
- Must be functionally literate in English sufficient to permit the full performance of the duties of the position.
- Must possess basic mathematical skills so as to be able to accurately administer proper medication dosage.
- Must be familiar with the duties of a certified nursing assistant.
- Must have basic computer skills.
- Must have no substantiated findings on the NC Personnel Registry or Health Care Program.
- Must have clear SBI record and maintain them during period of employment.
- Must have two-step tuberculin skin test (first step prior to hire and second test within two weeks of first test)
- Must be able to read, write, understand and follow directions.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Administers medications as ordered by a physician under supervision of a licensed nurse, in accordance with all state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy.
- Must be able to accurately take and record vital signs of residents as assigned or as may be required by certain medications.
- Accurately record the administration of medications and/or treatments as required by law and/or facility.
- Observes patients for and reports and reactions and/or side effects of medications to a licensed nurse on the shift.
- Accurately administers PRN medications in accordance with state and federal regulations and consistent with facility policy.
- Documents reason for and response to PRN medications in a timely manner.
- May dispense narcotics and must accurately account for them under the supervision of the licensed nurse, (or charge nurse), per facility policy.
- Properly secures medications carts and/or medications rooms per state and federal regulations and facility policy.
- May make observation rounds under the supervision of the licensed nurse or charge nurse on the shift.
- May supervise nursing assistants/orderlies as assigned by the charge nurse.
- Attends facility educational in-services as required.
- Follows federal, state and facility policies and guidelines in effect.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Must be able to distribute medication from the cart/ medication room.
SPECIAL DEMANDS
- Highly developed observation skills are desirable.
- Tolerance, Patience, Empathy and Concern are desirable.
HOURS AND DAYS REQUIRED: Various
ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Near perfect attendance is required in the full-time position.
